According to Time Shipping Journal , the world shipping industry is faced with shortage of manpower now. Qualified, efficient and reliable manpower in shipping is of great demand worldwide.
The report says "Today there is shortage
of quality seafarers due to increase in demand
India supplies roughly 18000 officers to the
merchant ships Deck Officers & Engineers
put together Internationally there is expected
to be a shortfall of trained officers in the
coming years and it is projected that the supply
of officers will fall by 15%. India is well
poised to cash on this opportunity.

Director General of Shipping observes that, "the Government has not allowed Private Institutions set up Marine Training Institutes during 1980's. This has allowed other countries to gain competitive advantage. Since 1990, the Government has allowed private organisations to impart Maritime training and with that India should be able to augment the supply of trained manpower to balance the expected shortfall."
